Applecrest Farm Orchards, located in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, is celebrated as the state's oldest and largest apple orchard, and it holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated apple orchard in the United States, having been established in 1913.

Early History

The land that Applecrest occupies has a rich history dating back to 1665 when it was first settled by James Prescott from Digby, Lincolnshire, England. Over the centuries, the property changed hands multiple times, with significant developments occurring under various owners. In 1913, Walter Baldwin Farmer purchased the farm and initiated its transformation into a prosperous apple orchard. He planted several thousand apple trees, laying the foundation for what would become Applecrest Farm Orchards.

Development and Growth

Under Farmer's stewardship, the orchard expanded, and innovative marketing strategies were employed to attract visitors. Notably, in the 1920s, an "Apple Train" ran weekly from Boston to the orchards, allowing city dwellers to pick their own apples—a pioneering example of agritourism.

After Farmer's passing, the orchard changed ownership and was eventually acquired by William L. and Jean Wagner in 1954. Despite initial unfamiliarity with apple cultivation, the Wagners dedicated themselves to continuing the business, and the orchard has remained under the Wagner family's ownership since then. As of 2006, Peter Wagner became the sole owner of Applecrest.

Modern Era and Offerings

Today, Applecrest spans approximately 124 acres, a reduction from its peak size due to various land sales over the years. The orchard cultivates over 40 varieties of apples, including McIntosh, Cortland, Macoun, Ida Red, and Red Delicious, producing around 40,000 bushels annually. In addition to apples, the farm grows peaches, berries, sweet corn, pumpkins, and a variety of summer vegetables. Visitors can enjoy all-natural apple cider, made-from-scratch confectioneries like their famous hot cider donuts, and an array of other locally produced farm goods.

In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Applecrest announced the opening of a new farm-to-table restaurant on the property, further enhancing its commitment to providing fresh, locally sourced produce directly to consumers.
